"The black chair" or "la chaise de l'artiste", is a chair I made for artists to use while contemplating their work. This chair is conceived as a sculptural object, with each part intricately related to the others, forming a cohesive composition within three dimensions. The design juxtaposes forms created by material with those created by the absence of material, resulting in a dynamic interplay of mass and void. The chair exhibits a structural rhythm, intentionally deviated at points to create a play of proportions, melodies, and pauses. It is both elegant and sturdy, constructed from leftover pallet wood through an intuitive process of assembling and reconfiguring parts until achieving a balanced whole. The design features a mix of straight and slanted lines, enhancing the dialogue between mass and void. To unify the chair’s appearance and conceal the roughness of the recycled wood, I chose to finish it with black lacquer. This not only gives the chair a sleek, uniform look but also adds a subtle shine, enhancing its overall aesthetic appeal. The chair exemplifies the creation of something useful from waste, while simultaneously opposing industrial production methods. It celebrates the imperfections and playfulness of craftsmanship, highlighting the beauty in intuitive, hands-on creation.
